Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation

With sports injuries, the goal is to get you back to sport as soon as is possible.   Diagnosis is an extremely important part of your journey as the part that is hurting isn't necessarily the injured part.  Diagnosis by an experienced physiotherapist will determine the exact injury, allowing for effective treatment, advice on injury avoidance in the future and a return to sport.  The stages of treatment at our clinic are listed below.

Early Stage Rehabilitation

With a more significant injury,  including tears of muscle and ligament, the body undergoes an acute response often creating pain and swelling in the process. There is a complex cascade of events that leads to the experience of pain and often swelling.  Controlling pain and swelling is crucial in the initial stage and studies have demonstrated that appropriate treatment in this stage determines a better recovery.  Relative rest,  support taping for joint control or swelling and the RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) protocol allows for better resorption of damaged cells and an earlier start to recovery.

Late Stage Rehabilitation

In this stage range,  strength and proprioception (joint movement control) have improved and the actual demands of the sport must be considered.  The fun part, this is where the sport is broken down with full consideration of joint positions, speed and coordination.

Mid Stage Rehabilitation

In this stage tissue healing has commenced but remains immature.  It is the job of the physio to determine how much load or range needs to be applied to the healing injury.  Appropriate stress is applied and good tissue healing occurs, Too much stress or too little stress lead to poorer outcomes.

Hooray Return to Sport

Almost there.  The late stage of rehab is completed and it's almost time to go.   A few training sessions with progression through the sports specifics and basics, is ideally completed before a durable return to sport can be expected.

Injuries happen in all populations that participate in sports.  Its no reason to not get involved.  The benefits far outweigh the risks and if the worst happens, Physiosense is here to help.
